Hello, possible new 2011 X6M owner

Hello all, about to pull the trigger on a 2011 X6M and while at the dealership, I plugged in my iPod Touch with the standard Apple USB cable and the iPod says "device not supported". I've searched for an answer but I seem to be getting conflicting information about needing the Y-cable.

The X6M has the premium sound package and the DVD changer in the glove box. Is there a special cable I need?

Is there a retrofit or software update or possible coding that can make 2011's built in August 10' work like the newer models? Thanks!

You need the BMW cable to get the ipod touch working. Simple as that.

If you have any coding specific questions, I can answer those too.

Thanks. I figured I needed that cable. I'll miss my album artwork too. LOL

Actually after further investigation, it looks like this may be able to be changed via coding so that you can use your regular white cable.

Even for an iDrive system built in AUG 10?

I believe so, it should take about 5 minutes to test via coding.

I had a 2009 X650i and it worked the same way as my 2013 X5M - just the apple USB cable.

Note that it has to plug into the USB in the armrest and not the USB in the glove compartment (which is just for loading music onto the inbuilt hard drive via a USB stick).

AFAIK the "official BMW cable" hasn't been required for many model years now - certainly not on any of the "new generation" (HD display) iDrive versions.

Thanks for the info! I didn't think he would be plugging it into the glove box instead of the armrest USB.

I've only ever used the USB input in the glove box.

And when I plug in the iPod using the Apple cable, it says "device not supported". When I use the BMW Y-cable, it works like a champ.
