I think this hood design is a sign of things to come from BMW. It's to do with hitting pedestrians. More of an impact.

What I meant by design mistake is if you look at the third picture down, you see the hood to kidney grill gap. It looks like it gets much wider as it creases down at the headlight, the last two inches. Even though it is a perfect gap, the design makes it look like poor quality when viewed fron the front.
