E83 X3: 2003-2006 vs 2007-2010 pros and cons

Hi guys,

- Currently own a 2005 X5 3.0i 6spMT with 130K, car runs fine.

- Want to get an E83 X3 for son in college.

- The 2003-2006 X3 has M54 engine, which I am very familiar with.

- For 2007-2010, I understand it is an N52 engine and electric water pump (which should be replaced every 50K-60K etc.).

- I don't mind buying a 2007-2010 X3 with 80K or so. Can someone go over the pros and cons of 2007-2010 X3 for me?

Better off with 03-06. The n52 is awful basically no power gains, the water pump like you mentioned, I hate the 6spd auto it shifts way too much, the leds burn out in the tails... my brother,gf, and I have 04,05,06 e83’s all auto brother and gf have about 170k I have 200k never had any problems except for the common evap core on mine. I’ve also added the lci bumpers to my car that’s the only thing I don’t like about the early e83, my gf has an MSport so she has the proper bumpers. If you get a 2006 it has the MSport painted bumper with out the MSport skirts.. the 2006 is the year to get

I preferred the M54 over the N52 when I was searching for an X3. Loved my '06 MSport

Thanks for the replies.

- Technically speaking, I can replace the Evap Core but I hate that job.

- For E83 X3 series:

1. What year(s) affected by the AC Evap Core issues?

2. Is it an O-ring (sealing) issue or holes in the EVAP Core?

3. If Evap Core ever goes, what years/mileage does it go?

All e83 and e46 have this problem through ALL years they all use the same part. So 03-10 e83 have the problem. The actual core itself leaks from where is seemed together. Mine was leaking at 150k and took 2 recharges and died completely so I’d say around 180? Mine went. The job was surprisingly easy on my car it took maybe 6 hours total? I was familiar with how everything came apart though

My 05 A/C has been down for about 2 summers now...i dread the job can you give me clarity so that I can make the repair.
Concerning the 07 I've heard of too many problems that I don't care to deal with. Plus,,,I want to keep my dip stick
