Next Mod: Illuminated Door Sill

Many of you have probably seen the blue illuminated door sills on MBenz. They even offer it as accesories for some BMWs. Unfortunately, none is avaiable for the X3. Here is a little preview of what is to come.

Start with some electroluminescent (EL) sheets. This will be your bottom layer. Buy the BMW door sill sticker (see 4 & 5 below) or design your own at any decal shop. This will be your top layer. Cut the EL sheets to the size of the door sill sticker. Now on with the top layer. Cut out letters or whatever design you want. What you cutout will be what is illuminated. The sticker itself will block out the rest of the light. In the case of the BMW door sill sticker, I would probably cut out the letters BMW and the horizontal stripe. Stick door sill sticker over EL sheet. Use 3M double sided tape to stick the finished product on the door sill. Wire it up to your interior lights and you have youself illuminated door sills. I still have to figure out where to wire everything. I might have to drill a small hole under the sticker in the door sill to keep the wires hidden. One thing I haven't decided is should I go w/ BMW orange or ice blue? I mean I want to go w/ blue because it will match w/ my car. Orange to match with the interior clusters but then again the cluster aren't lit when I get in or out of the car. So I'm thinking blue. I will probably give this a shot once I have some free time. I'll be sure to post pics and keep you guys updated.

Not really going for functionality, just something different and cool since you can easily customize what you want it to say on the door sill. I was just throwing the idea out there for those X3'ers that likes engineering things. I know I am one of them.

Great Idea...I've actually been looking for some on Ebay and the only thing I can find are non illuminated metal looking ones for 130.

Thank you for posting this and I can't wait to see what you come up with...
