Service Engine Light

My Service Engine Light came on yesterday. My X3 has 24,000 miles on it and the computer says 9500 until maintenence is due. Any thoughts on why the light may have came on before I call the $tealer?

It happened to me a few weeks ago on the way home. I was changing lanes, kicked it and got nothing, zero, zilch, nada, it was like driving a 4 cyl. Looked down at the gauges and saw the service engine light on. Made my way home. When I started her up the next morning, all was back to normal. Search the threads, one theory is the gas cap not on properly. Good luck.

There was a recall notice for the ignition coils, and one of the side effects was that the engine service light could come on prematurely. If you haven't done the replacement, check with your dealer and they should replace it at no charge.

Dealer will take care of it. Also popped up for me last week, right after a "Check Gas Cap" readout. I pulled over, verified that gas cap was tight (turned one notch to right-that's it), and went on... No loss of power or anything. When I took her in for Inspection II this week, they said the Gas Cap error reflects a loss of fuel-line pressure, so the SES automatically clicks on. They checked the fuel lines, tanks and cleared the errors.
So it doesn't have to be too big a deal... and that's probably the case with your mileage. I'd take it in just to be sure, or code-read it to see what the initial cause was, if possible.
Hope it works out!

The light went off after I took the gas cap off and put it on again. That is what the $tealer told me to do over the phone.
