For some reason I'm thinking BMW installed the CD changer on the X3 up near the console, which tells me that it may be a different unit then the traditional one mounted in the trunk/boot area. In either case, it should be a straightforward plug-n-play install, just make sure you get one that fits into the X3.

the wiring is already in the centre console under the arm rest, all the changers are the same you just need the specific x3 mounting kit. plenty of posts on this here or at www.bimmerfest.com try a search. and http://www.bmwcdchanger.com/x3/
