ok guys need a bit of help, i have all of the bits for a nav retrofit sitting here in front of me. what i need to know is what do i need to ask the dealer to CODE, also can this be coded before the car has the nav in it or do i need to do this after i put the nav in,

also what does the coding do????

Ask the dealer to perform the Professional Nav retrofit coding after you've done the full install. This will update the Mk4 with the VIN and various other settings specific to the X3. However, Kiwikochen's navcoder tool will allow you to do this yourself for free provided you can get hold of an ibus interface. See navforum for more details.

Retrofit coding at a dealer has the advantage of checking the software levels of all the related modules - radio, cluster, bluetooth and will bring all of them up to the latest levels. This is no more than 1 hours work for a dealer with the right daignostic / coding tools. Dealer coding also updates BMW's database to show you've corrctly fitted the sat nav option for future diagnostic / repair work.

Mk4 navcomputers default to European mode and 7 series spec. THis will work fine in the X3. My used Mk4 worked first time, but if you want everything to be same as factory fit, get a retrofit coding done by BMW.

I have 2 tft screen and no one show anything! It opens and close well...

To code a nav computer with VIN and other vehicle details takes no more than 5 minutes, 10 if a O/S software or language update is required, say to v29.1. See nav forum for details.

You can do this yourself with Kiwijochen's navcoder software and an ibus interface, or pay a dealer to do it.

A dealer can also do a retrofit coding of Prof Sat Nav using their diagnostic computers. This has the advantage of updating the software in related components as well as the nav computer to get them all to a known working configuration level (cluster, radio, screen, ULF, etc). It also updates BMW's service computer to show your car has had option 609 correctly retrofitted, preserving the BMW warranty. Some independents have the necessary coding equipment.

For my X3 with very recent / new sat nav parts the retrofit module coding took about 1 hour and the dealer charged me £95 + vat. They kindly enabled voice activation of the bluetooth module at the same time. I have heard of situations where secondhand parts can lead to software incompatibilities or other situations where a dealer has taken 2 days to correctly synchronise new module software during a retrofit. My advice is to agree a fixed-price for this work.

the screen ratio of that screen does not seem to be 16:9

it looks 4:3 or almost 1:1
