The gaps are small, panels are aligned, stuff doesnt rattle or fall off, and it's very low-maintenance. Even some Toyota interiors aren't fabricated as well as the X3 IMO. Almost every US-made Toyota I've seen in the past number of years has had misaligned panels somewhere.
Agreed on current Toyotas, but you haven't had two X5s and a 5-Series (or any more upscale BMW, no offense to you). Once you can see what BMW can do, and for virtually the same price point, (3er) it is a valid argument.

I do agree that the E39 and the E53 have a nicer interior. However, you pay more for those vehicles, as it is a bit more "luxury". Thus, if I was paying $50-70k for a E53 X5 or $40-60k for a E39, I would expect a nicer interior. However, the X3 started at $30k back in 2004, and today it's around $40-50k. It's on the level of a 3-series and targeted at a younger audience (at least it was that way back in 2004). I'll admit I don't expect fancy fancy wood or plastics and I just expect "well-built", but my standards are already higher than most kids this age (they just want big engines and wheels), and I find the X3 quite acceptable. I sound like a broken record when I say this, but my friend who has the A-spec '04 TL, remarked about the high quality of my interior a few years ago. I was like "are you ?". Now after a few years, my X3 has twice the mileage of his TL. And yet mine has aged FAR better than his TL's interior.

Anyway, BMW's heard your complaints, The 2007 has an improved interior with more leather and finer-grain textures.

The interior on the E60 and E90 isn't anything remarkable. Fancy fancy wood, but it doesn't feel like the E39 and E46 respectively. The word that comes to mind is "superficial"

I understand what you are saying. I have an '04 TL in my extended family, and I have driven it once or twice. I can say that the controls are a bit nicer, but the leather is very rubbery.
I like the new wood on the dash and the finer textures, but the way the audio/climate is set up kind of bugs me. And c'mon, you can get dual zone climate on a Jetta.

X3 is based off the E46. The 3-series never had dual zone climate. And what's wrong with the old-fashioned BMW radio/HVAC controls? Do the buttons scare you?

No, no, I like them, but the way the unit is on the dash is a bit weird. Dosen't flow as well as other models. (E46, E53, E39). Also, no rear air vents? C'mon. It dosen't matter if the E46 didn't have it, the X3 is a premium luxury vehicle, it shouldn't be that hard to put in. Also, it came out in what, 2004?

I agree, this was a bit of an oversight and evidence of cost cutting. They also forgot a door ajar dash light (rectified '05), forgot to light the rear cigarette lighter + window switches (rectified '07), and the wiper stalk needs to be from the X5 with the push-button to spray the windshield (you can't spray the front washers w/o turning off the rear wiper). The black plastic interior door handles on the '04s also were a bit low-rent.

Built solid as a drum though. I never told this story, but when we were stuck on I-81 back in Feb, we had to navigate through uncharted backroads without a map. There was a 1/2" coating of ice on the backroads that made the road extremely bumpy for tens of miles nonstop. Basically, it was a torture test to see when and whether the dash would squeak. Amazingly, NO squeaks emerged from the dash!
