won't unlock
This was the second time it happened, the first was at the dealership, after they programmed the doors to lock at xx MPH. Grr...I'm getting annoyed with the X3. Anybody else have this problem?

I do on an occasional basis. It's not a huge problem worth mentioning to the dealer though (because surely they won't be able to duplicate it). The simple solution is just to relock and re-unlock it. An occasional hiccup, like the disappearing dash lights.

The problem is very intermittent. Until we can reproduce it on a consistent basis to show the dealer, I don't think there is much that we can do, but chalk it up as an occasional electrical "hiccup", as AznMPower32 puts it.

Mines fine but I do have a "Air Pump" getting replaced on saturday. 1st thing to need attention in 36k miles. Now worries here. This X3 has been the most trouble free BMW I've ever owned.

Actually it gets worse over time. This malady has been a problem with my wife's '99 E46 for the past 4 years. Now it happens something like 1 of every 10 times she unlocks her car. She did try switching to her spare remote key which temporarily solved the problem, but after about a year, occurrences were as frequent as before. My guess is the central locking control box that pulses the door actuators is probably the culprit. I forget the BMW acronym that describes the box.
It doesn't seem to bother my wife. She's grown accustomed to the problem. |

there's a little black switch on the door panel, a child proof safety feature. I discovered this when I could not get one of my rear passenger doors to unlock. Up position will let you activate lock with key remote.

I was looking into the GM5 module used on the E46 and noticed that it is the same module used on the X3. There have been numerous E46 owners who have reported having door unlock problems with the central locking system and the GM5 module. There is an excellent write up on the subject here. http://www.bmwgm5.com
