Anyone tried thicker oil than OEM?

I have just changed my oil in my 2002 M5, and with the extra oil I bought (three 5 liter containers), now contemplating putting 10W-50 oil in my 2.5l 2004 X3. Other than the possible lowered fuel economy due to added resistance, what does everyone think about this approach?

Run what the factory says to run. there's more than one reason to do so.

The book says 5W-30 or 5W-40. I don't recommend bumping up to 10W- anything, the engine may not like it. I run 0W-40 when I buy the motor oil myself for the "in-between" oil changes.

Been flogged to a pulp, here...
run whatcha like.

I doubt that oil is going to make the M5 blink, but one might miss
the "5W" part in a Montreal January.

From the Front Page of This Site, a good oil info capsule by
a knowledgeable poster, "withidl" : Lube 101.
Worth a read, even if it is slightly more than text message
in length, ;>)

Oops, I voted before I saw you were in Montreal.

I doubt it gets hot enough up there to be needed. The recommended oil should be fine.
