Can I remove the under seat sub without removing the seat?
I will replace my sub under the driver's seat soon. I wonder if I will be able to yank the speaker out from under the seat without detaching the seat? I will be able to loosen the screws but not sure there is enough room to remove and reinstall. |

My *guess* is access to the sub will be easier if you loosen the bolts that attach the seat so you can move it up to allow more room to work. Shouldn't be that much additional work.

OK. I read something about airbag etc. and got a bit scared. I now realize I need to lift the seat, very little room in the front. Anyone knows if I need to loosen a battery cable or something like that or just go ahead?

The only interface I am aware of between the airbag system and the seats is a pressure sensor in the passenger seat. It is used to disable the passenger airbag when no one is sitting in the seat. That should present no concern for airbag deployment if you loosen the seat from the body.
If you have concerns about an accidental airbag deployment, I believe the BMW TIS (technical information system) procedure is to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. The TIS may call out waiting a certain length of time as well, like 15 minutes. Its been a while since I read that part in the TIS. I have removed both the steering wheel and front passenger airbag on my X3 twice without any issues. In addition to having the battery disconnected, I also make sure I don't have a static electrical charge built up on myself. Simply touch a metal part of the vehicle to ground youself and remove any built up charge. (same as someone who is working on say the inside of a computer) My climate is very humid so it hasn't been a concern. |

Many thanks. Since it's such a quick thing I'll disconnect the negative when swapping the speaker, will check TIS about time too. Now I just have to wait for the speaker, will arrive when I am on vacation so a couple of weeks.

Don't know if anyone has looked into it, but if you can get your hands on a set of Digital Designs they have nice SQ and from what I've heard, comparable to focal without the big price tag.
Currently have DDAW6.5 and CS5.2 in a home speaker set-up and they sound great. Can handle a lot of power as well. |
