X3 Tailgate Handle

I was opening the tailgate on my wife's new 3.0 SD sport a couple of days ago. It was raining hard and my fingers slid off the rubber and caught on a fairly sharp strip of metal above it. I have two fairly deep cuts in my fingers.

I phoned the dealer and asked if there should be a piece of trim covering this blunt razor or whether the handle was improperly fitted. He came back with the astonishing information that they were all like that! Also, I was (of course) the first customer to complain. I said that I felt more like sueing than complaining!

It seems incredible that a company such as BMW can leave bare metal edges such as this waiting to catch you out, particularly in the USA where people are so ready to sue. Has anyone else had a problem with this edge? Maybe ours is sharper than average.
