X3 Wheel Clearance Question

I'm thinking about getting a set of winter wheels and tires for our X3. Rather than stick with the stock 17" wheel and 235/55-17 tire size, I'm thinking of moving down to a 16" wheel so I can go to a narrower tire like a 205/70-16 or 215/65-16 for better bite and traction. Does anyone know if a 16" wheel will work on the X3 (i.e. clear the brake calipers)?

I don't think 16s will fit because the minimum is 17s due to the large brake disc size. but that's not for sure...
