For those interested in this topic, please see the thread on the E53 Forum as it some very good up to date information.
The thread is called: Post Your Extended Warranty/Maintenance Pricing Last edited by X5 Meister; 02-27-2009 at 02:09 AM. |

Nice, but you don't really need to cross-post between multiple forums. In addition, there is no reason for the X3 to cost as much as the X5. Part of the reason is that it doesn't break half as much as an E53.

Just wanted to make a short post to make sure people knew about it, and I didn't copy the entire thread over again. I think it's great that X5 World members can get the discount and just wanted to make as many of them aware of it as possible. I personally called around and was quoted by one dealer $2295 + tax (even though I was out of state) for an E53. That's $600 over MSRP + tax! Ouch.
Another good reason to know about the program is that as long as you are still within 5 years/60,000 miles and let's say your Inspection II pops up along with your brake lining light and you take it to the dealer who quotes you $2000+ for both jobs. You can buy the extended maintenance plan under the extended enrollment option for $1795 through Macon BMW (again $100 over dealer cost) on the spot and BMW will allow the work to proceed under your new maintenance plan. I never look at the X3 forum even though there are plenty of electronic systems that are identical to the E53 X5, etc. I don't think frequency of breakdown has anything to do with the pricing. If you look at the way it's structured it falls more in line with the original cost of the car. That is why the M6 is double the 1 series, not because it breaks down twice as much. Honestly, once the warranty expires, there is little reason to take it to the dealership. A good independent shop, often listed in the local BMW CCA chapter magazines, will more than suffice and perform great service at a substantially lower cost. The X3 has only seen the dealer once since it passed 50k and that's due to the airbag recall.
Inspection II for me, along with a whole slew of preventative fluid changes, cost $762 at an indy shop. Their service was as good, if not better than the dealership, and the lounge (not that I used it) and garage were much better. Of course, some folks may like a warranty especially if their vehicle has a less-than-stellar reliability history. But if a BMW is reliable and doesn't have unusual repeated problems, warranties end up being a lot of money and well, little use. Just my €0,02, everyone has their opinion. |

I disagree with you. In any case the point of the post wasn't to debate warranties. It was to simply inform members who might be interested in the program the fact that X5 World members get a nice discount on it if they choose to take advantage of it. Period.
