Question X3 Annoying rattle and notchy gear change.

Hi all, i have a 2005 2.0d sport with a few irratating faults, firstly i have a tinny rattle which seems to be coming from the exhaust back box area, the rattle happens if the car is labouring ie doing 30mph in 5th gear or when the load is off the near side rear wheel going around corners or islands i know 30mph in 5th is a little low but i am trying to create the fault.

The second fault is the gearbox is very stiff when i am moving from 1st to 2nd then 3rd to fourth i sometimes have to force the gear lever to get the gear and then it's very notchy, other times the gearbox is has smooth as silk i have had a new clutch etc under warranty but it is still the same, i have the BMW extended warranty on the car which expires July so i would like to get this sorted asap.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Sean

we have a 3.0 petrol so not sure if yours is the same. Look at the exhaust tips from the rear, ours is twin pipes and if yuo look into the pipe about an inch in is a butterfly valve. If you have this, get someone to take it to the revs and see if this rattles. Ours did and it's bloomin annoying.

It should open/shut on revving. If it is working the solenoid is aok, if it is not opening fully/closing fully (and rattles as a result) my guess is a air leak in the vacuum system.

Do not panic at this stage !!! (like I did ), most likely cause for loss of vacuum is a leak in the rubber pipe, the most common area is as follows:

With engine ticking over, but from a cold start so you don't get burnt, get under the box, and above the butterfly exiting the exhaust is a rubber pipe. This pipe is bent 180 degrees back on itself and loops towards rear bumper etc etc. It is usually at the 180 degre bend you get a fracture of the rubber pipe. An easy test is to wet your finger and put it on the hose where it bends or a small mirror (though good luck with the mirror unless you are a dentist !)

If totally detached...there is your prob. If a split (no matter how small)pull the hose from where it joins the box, cut clean end and put back on. 5 minute job.

Must state this information is as provided to me by a friendly forum member so I cannot take any 'knowledge credit'

If you do not have the buttefly....I wasted my/your time LOL.

I would not have thought it was a loose baffle as they generally rattle/vibrate at hig revs from my one experence on a VR6, many moons ago (fantastic car btw)

Good luck
