Small led next to instrument lighting adjustment

Hi
Does some happen to know what is the small led (see attached picture) to the left from the instrument lighting illumination intensity adjustment? Or what is it - I have not found anything about it in the owners' manual.

BMW X3 xDrive 20d 2009.

Thanks for advice.

It is a light sensor that adjusts the brightness of the displays (Board Computer, Radio) based on the relative ambient outside light. Put your finger over it, and the displays will dim.

You can have fun verifying that while driving by putting your finger over the sensor and watching the display brightness change, after a short delay.

Not worth getting too distracted though!

Strange, but true: My X3 doesn't have the green LED on the left of the Auto position.

Automatic headlight control is bundled with the rain sensor/auto. wipers. An option for some geographic regions.
Standard in Canada under "Comfort and Convenience", but elsewhere you might need to have Premium Package or Cold Weather Package.

For vehicles that also have the optional Adaptive Headlights (only available with Bi-Xenons, I think), that little green LED also serves in flashing mode to indicate a problem with that system.
