X3 Tiptronic issue

Hi Guys,
I am currently looking at buying an 2004 X3 for my wife. It seems there is a problem with the shift. When you knock it over to the manual shift mode and try to shit up and down it just stays drive and continues to shift automatic. Could the issue be a micro switch in the selector lever or could it be a more serious issue. Any advice would be appreciated.

When you move it over and shift up/down, does the gear display change to M2, M3 (or whatever gear)? Or does it not recognise the manual mode (or sports mode SD) at all?

No it does not recognise the manual shift mode at all...the display just stays in "D" mode.

Likely something wrong with a switch of some sort. Sorry I can't be of more help, but I've never heard of this issue and it may require a trip to the BMW centre.
