Thanks ngcreese for that clarification.

I have one follow up question for you experts about the little ball in the BMW tray: does the standard Garmin Nuvi clip snap on to it pretty tight? I am asking because on one of the other forums it seems someone had to mod the round hole on their clip to get a tight fit. And I am talking about the clip which looks like this form the side:

BTW, tt appears that getbmwparts.com has stopped selling the tray (GPS Install Kit 65900445996). I'll probably be getting it from pelicanparts.

TIA!

Hmm... I seem to remember there being a small notch on the ball mount. I dremeled that away. I didn't need to modify the holder clip the mounts onto the ball, and holds the GPS in place.

I never got around to installing the one that I purchased, and now we are thinking about getting a larger truck.
Pelican has it for $88+ shipping (probably at least another $10= $98. If you want mine I sell it to you for $80 shipped any place in states.

Thanks again ngcreese. Based upon your response I made a leap of faith and got the part. The clip doesn't go on to the ball as-is, so I'll dremel the ball notch away like you had to.

This will definitely provide for a clean secure mount.

I haven't decided if I will connect the mini USB to the back of the radio as the intructions call for. I am not sure if I can even do that - I installed an IPOD adapter last year, so there may be a comptability issue - haven't gotten that far.

Hardwiring to a fuse like most of you have done is probably a cleaner option.

Happy Camper

I dremeled the little notch away (just left a tiny bit on) and the Garmin Nuvi clip secures on to it nice and tight!

I have a Iphone that is now securely attached to this tray. Thanks to the Otterbox Defender case, whose clip fits the Garmin clip very well!
