Question X3 Oil leak 2.5 litre petrol 04 model

Hi Wondering if anyone has experienced an oil leak around rear diff area ?
I have only done 80,000Klms.
Car has been a real beauty and I am wondering if this may be expensive to fix?
Should i get a new 2 litre diesel x3 and replace it.
any ideas welcome
Maxey

There are really only a few places on the rear diff that can leak gear oil... the more common would be the output shaft seals, less common would be the input shaft seal, and almost never leaks would be the rear cover.

Just look under there and see where on the rear diff is wet looking and call around for estimates. Shouldn't be too expensive at all.

Thanks Weasel sorry for the delay i have been away-- the whole diff seems to covered in oil but seems to have stopped dripping-- I think I had better get it checked next service as I can't see exactly where the leak is from.

You could always clean if off with some brake parts cleaner, making it easier to see where the oil is coming from. But if you plan on bringing it in for service soon that would make it look like it wasn't leaking if it was still cleaned off/dry...
