By the way, my wife is Italian/American. She speaks Italian fluently, and we visit Italy almost every year. We go to Asiago, which where her parents are from (Asiago and Milano). We love Italy. What a wonderful place, and what warm, beautiful people! We're going back in May.

Every summer I'm in Split, Croatia and there are a lot of cars from Italy. Last summer an X5 with the 3.0d sped by me at 200-210kph thru a mountain pass downhill. I know because I was going about 180kph....the diesels are nice...very nice. I'd probably look into buying one over the 3.0gas if they were available in N.A.. Good luck...

Almost all engines are diesel in europe..it's true they are a bit noisy (even if common rail injection is very good)..but they drink less and they have a monstruos couple..
I think that now that gasoline has becomed expensive also in Usa in the next years diesel engines will spread there.. In Italy the prices are about:

1 litre (0.27 gallons) of gasoline: 1.25€ (1.45$)

1 litre " of diesel: 1.15€ (1.33$)

How much diesel and gasoline in usa? Are there differences betwee several states? Which was the increase in the last time?

However.......if you come in Italy or Croatia to the sea I recommend you to go in Puglia,Sicily or Sardinia..our beaches are better than Caribbean..sure!

In Canada, 1L is about 80 cents right now...it was up to $1.14 a couple weeks ago.

Diesel is about $10 cents cheaper, but the take-home-message is that diesels can go much farther. For eg. a local Mercedes dealer here advertises that the Mercedes E300 diesel can go 1000km with each tank. That is about double what I get on my BMW gas engine....that's where the real savings come...

Infact the advantage of diesels is more the lower consumption than the price of the fuel..A gasoline engine drinks 45% more than a diesel one with the same performances.. However it's to say that a diesel car costs 10-15% more more than a gasoline..
