ZF or GM gearbox in the X3?

IMO, nothing wrong with the transmission itself. There were lots of problems with a hesitation just off idle, having to do with transmission control software (software by BMW, not GM). There were various service campaigns on that.

The GM auto tranny was only headache I had in the X3.

Our 2005 X3 3.0l had a bit of a delay till start engaging the gear when cold. Problem disappeared after a few minutes/miles.
I went to a shop and they told me my my transmission is bad with 50k Miles. Losing pressure?!

Found a website where some BMW tech mentioned that there is a update for the X3 GM tranny to "delete delay".

However I figured out when I reset the transmission with INPA, it was working fine.
I had to do that every 2 month and that was fine for me.

Hopefully it's a Opel German / GM transmission.

My X3 was built in Austria, that I know for sure. You can't buy anything German anymore. Bollocks!!!!
