Let's assume for a moment that it gives the 1% power gain that they claim, at normal driving rpm. That means that at around 2000 rpm, you may need to drive at 2020 rpm to get the same power as before you installed it. Think you can notice that?

I'm with MD, pick your favourite charity and send them the money. Same effective performance difference, and you can feel better as well.

I've had a problem with my afe drop in filter causing me a lean engine code, and I'm trying to FIX the issue and am not interested in giving money to a charity.

We're here to help those who have helped themselves. Numerous threads on this board about lean conditions or vaccuum leaks due to non-OE filters or botched installations.

Looking through the X3 threads, this has not been discussed. The service advisor told me that there is a Service Bulletin, in regards to this and installed the drop in filter. The thought process in my mind is to simply install software that would raise the air/fuel ratio. This just seems odd that it would throw a code for this. The computer should have adjusted and fixed the problem, but alas it did not.

To further this, they did vacuum leak checks and fuel leak checks and did not turn up anything.

So if I understand correctly, you installed a supposed performance enhancement product, but it produced error codes.

Without telling us any of that, you asked about another supposed performance enhancement product, in the unspoken hope that it would somehow correct the problems caused by the first aftermarket product?

How were we supposed to make that connection?

So, they put the correct filter back in. Is it OK now?

Computer software can't compensate for vacuum leaks, unmetered air, etc. And buying a product that advertises that it will add more fuel isn't going to fix your first problem.

You would get more assistance if you checked your attitude at the door, IMO.

I needed to replace the air filter anyways so I went ahead and got a rechargeable filter, that I have used in 4 different cars. Had no clue it would throw a code. Installed the oem filter and it's fine. Figured the lean code was due to there being an improper air/fuel ratio. Thus the question on the software.

Not trying to have an attitude, just trying to obtain some useful information.

Te air fuel ratio is maintained outside of the filter medium. That is something controlled by the ECU. If you give the car more air, it will give the motor more fuel. Hence, the ratio. 14 parts air, 1 part fuel. That formula is likely the same on the other 4 cars too.
