Can't Believe I'm Asking This

Our 2006 X3 with the M Sport package has approximately 83,000 miles and my wife has decided that she wants something with an automatic transmission. I start looking around and drove the new X3 3.5 (awesome) but had a hard time breathing after calculating payments. The trade value of my X is much lower than I had hoped (typical) and was wondering if instead of replacing it what are the prospects of changing the transmission? It's in great shape so there's no need to get rid of it. This project may take more time and $$$ than it would be worth. Do any of you have suggestions or ideas what it would cost?

I think the expense of changing the tranny will have you reconsidering the new x3.

Just get a second car, man.

You can pick up an automatic mid 80's Civic for about $300. Just let her drive that around.

...

Tell her it is good exercise for her knees and ankles, as in staying flexible.

Consider the new X1. It isn't far off the size of the current X3. We have an X3 now, a family member has an X1. I've driven it, and like it.

X1 only comes with an automatic.
