Most likely it was the LED driver board, BMW doesn’t sell this part by itself.

There is an aftermarket board you can purchase from eBay or Amazon. About a 15 min fix.

Rear LED light Repair REPLACEMENT Board Tail Light Led Chip (Replace valeo b003809.2)

About 40 each on Amazon.

Thanks - did some seaching yesterday and ordered up a set from ebay. Plan to upgrade all the inner & outer taillights with the new PCB's.
