Radar detector install for out 3.5 MSport
Finally convinced my wife a BMW was the way to go and in January we took delivery (in SC at the factory) of a white 3.5 M Sport. Everything has been good until she came close to getting a ticket on Friday. Searched the forum and haven't found any DIY's for the F25. Looking to hardwire a radar detector to the garage door controls similar to how I've done in the E53. Only problem is IDK where to start, that and the buttons are on the rearview. Anyone had any success with this yet?
Thanks,

I may not understand your question, but just did this:
I have a V1 hardwired to the back of the mirror. I'm using suction cups to the windshield and a short cable to the back of the mirror. The invisicord is piggy backed to the plug. There is a white/black and white/green (12V switched) there. |

Thanks for the reply Tibbys96z. Sorry for the unclear question. On my E53 I had followed this DIY. I'm going to look for the "white/black and white/green (12V switched)" wires you referred to. Did you have to dismantle the plastic (from the rear view) that meets the windshield to find said wires?
Thanks again,

Yes I did have to remove the plastic. It splits down the middle. I gently pried it apart with a little screw driver and my fingers.
My 11 X3 does not look like that DIY guide. I just removed the plastic and piggybacked into the pins. Put the plastic back on. Was a 5 minute ordeal. |

Looks like I'll be be splitting the plastic after work. Can't thank you enough as the main problem I knew I'd face (upon deciding to actually attempt opening it) was identifying the 'switched' wires.

can someone post pic please? how does it look with the wiring?
i was going to install my V1 the way I did on my 2012 X5. (pulling the overhead light compartment and attaching to green/white and ground) the idea of the rear view sounds simpler. not sure how to pop the plastic without cracking it on my x3. looks pretty solid.

You're right it is pretty solid. It has clips down the middle seem that need to be pulled apart. I used a small flat head with electrical tape to try to pad it to get it started, then used my fingers for the rest.
I pushed the pins of the invisicord through the back of the mirror (there is a little hole in the mirror mount) and into the back side of the plug. I do have a picture on my phone, but don't have time to upload right now. I'll try to remember to post it... |
