If anyone is interested, the install should be the same as on an X5 e70 model. (X4 seems to have a similar overhead console)

I did the overhead install on my 2012 X5 without a problem.

There is also kit from Valentine 1 called the Savvy which allows you to connect directly to your OBDC port under the steering column.
