Locked Out

I am wondering if anyone can help. I have a 2006 BMW X5 4.8is. The battery is dead and my front drivers side handle broke. To top it all off, I can not locate my key and the spare is in the vehicle. I've read in some of the posts that people know how to gain entry but it could only be PM to you. Can someone can please help. I need to get some work equipment out of the vehicle.

This happened one time to me in my f150 where I typically use the key pad to get in. It doesn't work with a dead battery. I was able to run jumpers directly to the alternator post or the starter post from under the truck and was unable to unlock. You might be able to do the same although you will need to find your key.

I've often wondered if Xs equipped with a tow package could be connected to a 2 amp trickle charger (thru the 7 pin connector).

Pin #1 (white) is ground and pin #4 (black) is 12v positive.

My guess is that the 12v positive is not always on. Probably only on with key. having said that, you could totally re-wire the plug to be always on, and then, yes, you theoretically could rig something up to charge the car from the 7 pin.

Actually, back in my MECP days, I would have done something with relays on the other pins so you could get the 12v to only open when something else was inserted into the other pins.

ahh the good old days

He can't find his keys and the spare key is in the car. So even if he is able to charge the battery he still can't get in.

Looks like the only alternative is to break a glass.

I agree. Cover the window with tape and break it and try not to get glass everywhere. No keys plus dead battery and broken door handle dont leave you much of a choice.

I guess I didn't read that first post very well.

Three simple rules always come up in these "Help, I'm locked out" threads........

1) Get all 3 keys at time of purchase (any missing? deduct BMW dealer replacement cost from negotiated price)

2) Keep 2nd remote key stored at home & magnetic case mount valet key under vehicle (Bell makes a good waterproof case with a CRAZY strong magnet).

3) If the drivers door handle carrier breaks, fix it ASAP!!!

I guess he could always try removing the kidney grilles and see if he could release the catch for the hood. If he is able to release the hood, he can charge the battery through the charge terminal in the engine bay. Once the battery is charge, he can call a locksmith with one of those airbag tools to force the car doors open enough to hit the unlock button on the console.

I want to thank everyone for there suggestions. In the next day or two I will have no alternative but to break the window. Hopefully someone can think of something else in the meantime.

I would call one of those lockout locksmith before breaking the glass.

If you do decide to break a window, don't break one of those small glass in the back, break the passenger side door. You can probably find one for sale on eBay or Amazon.
