I think they had a lot of blocked breathers because of the lengthy service intervals. They were trying to one-up Mercedes at the time. Often not a big deal for first owners but once they crud up they start to shoot oil out of every seal.
I'd stick to with the X5. It's always a case of better the devil you know in these situations. Remember, he's trying to swap out of his car - it's no doubt for a reason.
