Fuel Injection system fault

Hi guys,
I have a bit of a problem, my 3.0d stopped whilst driving the other day, the dash is displaying "fuel injection system", it will not start, just turns over and seems like its not getting any fuel. there is definitely fuel getting as far as the fuel filter as I removed the tubing from the output side and turned the car on and it filled a bottle quite quickly. I have not yet had the fault codes read, hoping to do that today or tomorrow, I just thought maybe there was some simple things I could be checking in the meantime. any guidance would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Change the fuel filter. You might be able to break the siege that way and open the gates.

there doesn't seem to be any restriction in the fuel filter as I checked the output side of it with the ignition on and there was a good flow from it.

A diagnostic test is imperative and should point you in the right direction
Since you confirmed that fuel is reaching the fuel filter and assuming it flows to injectors, then one can eliminate fuel pumps.
Theres is a fuel pressure rail sensor at the back of the manifold that usually goes ,you can try simply unplugging it and plugging it back, nothing to loose.
Like I said ,you must have a registered ECU fault, but from your feedback it could be this sensor!

Try resetting electrical system by disconnecting battery terminals and touching them for 30 mins or so !
