Just do a simple google search or youtube search for the BMW M5, 4.6is or 4.8is cluster (not sure if the M3 cluster does the same thing)...but these M clusters have fastenated many BMW 3/5/7/X5 owners since they were first offered...and many have tried for decades to get them to work.

But to answer your question in a way more specific than it was asked...those lights illunminate to inform the driver as to how high they can rev the engine without damaging it or having the engine management system automatically take control BEFORE the driver can damage the engine. The warmer the engine gets...the further/higher you can rev the engine and fewer lights illuminate.

Hopefully your quest was to know "why" they illuminate...because the answer to what they "do"...is they illuminate as the engine is revved.

Ditto! Mine are all illuminated on a cold start, and go out one by one as the engine warms up. The last red one always stays on. I've never tried it, but I read somewhere the computer will cut the throttle if you rev into the orange lights...
