^It's prob because our "little" I6 is working harder at higher rpm's than the V8 equipped models. I blame the CCV design as well for some oil consumption between changes. I'm down about a quart every 2500 miles.

I use AMSOIL in everything from the 22" string trimmer 5 HP engine to both vehicles. (X5 & V8 4Runner) I put AMSOIL motorcycle oil in the 30 Hp mower and garden tractor engines as it is engineered for air cooled use.
Have used it for 25 years and see no reason to change now.

Does this mean retroactively the engines will now fail due to using "unofficial" oil?
ruh roh.

![]() That e46fanatics crowd insists on BMW branded parts for literally everything. On one thread they were telling some guy that wanted to use aftermarket brake discs on his 325i and they all told him he was stupid and the discs would break in half on him during an emergency hard brake use. Sure some things you should use BMW parts but I have read many, many threads where people have used non oem parts or fluids in certain applications and have turned out just fine.

Might be worth mentioning I run 10 oz of Lucas Upper Cylinder Lube in EVERY fill up.
River Dave's Place - Lucas Upper Cylinder Lube - It's not about the MPG

Says 2-3 oz per 10 gallons, and more won't harm the system.
Since our tank is 25 gallons thats a bit more than recommended but its not bad. I'm going to get a quart and refill it with a gallon later on when I stop Wal Mart.

I'm not a fan of Lucas [or Amsoil, or snake oil, either
]. I do add the good, teutonic, moly lube oil treatment, usually every other change. Blackstone tells me the M54 likes it. When I replace a leaky VCG awhile back, underside of the cover and valves were clean as the proverbial whistle.
