Dealers in his area send their cars to him to overhaul the trans.
Who is Gary and how do I contact him?

I may just do that if my initial stuff doesn't help. The transmission works perfectly 98% of the time which leads me to believe it's nothing too invasive. No error messages on dash and mostly well behaved.

Have you driven other X5 with this trans? I would suggest you drive another X5 with this trans and see if it drive the same as your.

Thank you. I am considering driving a 4.4i as they are easier to find.

Earlier 4.4 X5 had the ZF5HP24 trans, not the same as your.

I know. The one I found is an 05 with the 6 spd auto. Driving mine today it’s been flawless.

I'm hoping that my issue is the just shrunken seals and old/bad fluid and out of date software. I do not get any transmission fail safe messages or error codes.

Update to my issue: After changing seals and fluid, trans got worse. Slip shifting ending in a bang and trans fail safe message. Changed valve body and solenoids and transmission is acting as new!

Thats good news. Did you get a valve body from the suggested vendor Gary?
