Secondary air pump
I have 2001 X5 BMW 4.4 with 160k miles Today I replaced the chain tensioner, the fan clutch as well as the fan. Upon starting the car and turning it off, I noticed that the air pump stayed on. I discoed the black battery cable to make it shut off. However once I put the cable back on to the battery the pump started back up with the car off. Any suggestions? Pull the relay controlling the Air Pump.

Cn90, Thank you for the reply. I unplugged the relay and plugged it back in. For now all seems to work fine. What happened remains a mystery !

Relay failure.
I'd remove the relay. Then de-commission the SAS system. Then place a small piece of black electrical tape over the dash CEL light. Then scan for new codes (non-SAS codes) once a month.
