Odometer trip odometer and outside temp no display

Went and filled gas tank.. Got back in , started motor... Pressed odometer reset button... Now odometer, trip odometer and outside temp display are out... Off/ no reading.

What did I do?

Checked manual. Didn't see anything...

Thoughts?

What happens if you do OBC Test 2? (Turn ignition to position 1...then press & hold the right cluster until CHECK CONTROL OK disappears & TEST 1 appears...release & press the right cluster button again & you should see TEST 2. Now press the left cluster button to start the cluster pixel & warning lights test.)

Bulb out? There are bulb behind the display to lid them up.

I TRIED THAT. CYCLED THRU WARNING LIGHTS AND ALL GAUGES 2ce. Then went to test3 that said locked.

All lit up except for odometer trip odometer and outside temp..

Tmv,

Fairly sure not a bulb as the entire line went out when I pushed the trip odometer button...

Just want to turn them back on??.

Other ideas?

Well,

Maybe it is a bulb... I'll give it a shot. Does the outside temp, odometer and trip odometer all 3 different bulbs?

The temp has been half lit up for a while now that I think about it..

So, I'll relace all of the bulbs. Do you know what the bulb number is?

Is it like the attached photo? See the outside temperature pixel value

You can still read all the pixels + values being displayed but not as bright as the other values in the instrument cluster.

For my case I was preparing to replace all the bulbs but one day it turned on after a cold start and stay lighted until now!

Not like pic. My odometer , trip odometer and outside temp are black/ not lit. Even when doing above test the are not lit.

Up until this issue, they did light up fine but outside temp #'s were dim and hard to read...

Since you got this far...why not just go ahead and UNLOCK your cluster so that you can access the other 21 TESTs if need be.

To unlock...add up the last 5 digits of your VIN...what ever the sum of those last 5 digts are...that is your X5 specific "magic number" to unlock the cluster.

When you try to use any OBC TEST that is locked (3-21) on an UNLOCKED cluster...when you see the message that the cluster is locked...you're already at TEST 19. Begin pressing the LEFT cluster button until you reach the sum of those last 5 digits of your VIN...then press the RIGHT button to set it.

Your cluster will remain UNLOCKED until power is lost to the cluster (like removing battery cable).

And if none of the pixels illuminated when you did TEST 2...and if the back lighting in the area was already dim before the pixels went out...then not only do you need to replace the incandescent bulbs mentioned above...you've probably got pixel issues and will need to get a new LCD core...or ribbon repair.

The e38/e39/e53 pixel issue is very common. In fact, I just got my e38's cluster repaired on a group buy on the e39 forum. It was sent in to Concrete Donkey (bimmerforum member) for repair. The original cluster was replaced back in 2003 in the BMW goodwill cluster program. And the cluster was great until about 2012/2013 when pixels started dropping out in odometer and 20 digit alpha/numeric display. In this last fix the LCD core was replaced and a new ribbon installed (with lifetime warranty).
