Water leaking into dome light/main overhead console
Ever since my moon roof virtually "exploded" and I finally got it closed (not fixed just shut) I'm not sure if its a problem it had before I purchased the vehicle but all the time, effort and $$$ I've put into this money pit is just getting me frustrated. During a recent downpour (and previously I went through a car wash to check the seal after the moonroof was closed after it had exploded) I've got water leaking from the two switches in the overhead console. Namely the defunked moonroof and the emergency switches. Its like the drainage holes are clogged and the rest of the water is draining into the overhead console. After the trip to the car wash I proceeded to try to seal up the surrounding rubber seal of the moonroof and hoped that solved my leaking problem. Apparently it didn't do much of anything. Still getting the same leaking problem as before (which is described earlier and I've also got a small leak in between the moonroof panels.) UGH. I love the car and seeing as its a 2005 I know that there may be "some" issues but this is getting ridiculous. Anyone got any tips/suggestions? Thank you so much for your help!! |

Are you sure it's the moon roof and not the seal between the windshield and the body. Look at the rubber piece at the top, they start to dry up and crack and could be the source of your leak.

I would check the drainage holes on each side of the tracks. And, since it has not been fixed it could be that the glass is not entirely in the sealed position.

I just had the same issue - get on top of it quickly, water got into my shifter mechanism and corrosion started rapidly impacting sport mode shifting. New shifter needed.
I have an 06, built in late 05, apparently there was a known issue (bulletin 54 06 06 - old cassettes might be replaced at discount ?? ) with the sunroof cassette which BMW addressed with a different cassette. That fixes some of the leaking issues. But, my leak was due to the drains being clogged - when I parked the x5 downhill, the water would run down to the front drains and then it would come into the vehicle - parking it uphill solved the water in the interior. I was gong to fix it myself but decided that I didn't want to take on dropping the entire headliner up front (my SA told me what the fix was) so I gave it to them to do and now I'm all set. Hope this helps some. Good luck. Quote:
