From frog to princess (build thread)
Hi all
This is a "light" build thread, where I will try to explain what I have been doing with my e53 since I bought her. I still have not made any big change but... we will see ![]() I found her in a second hand dealer in Spain. I visited her and found a low mileage engine (143k km/89k miles), with a reasonable body (repainted from dark green to black) with some nasty bits like the rotten tail pipes. And a horrible black fabric interior. Driver´s seat was in very bad shape. And the steering wheel leather sewing was missing :-( The front headlights were almost fully blind (in the picture they do not look so bad though, anyway they were very very bad looking) Anyway I test drove it and found it good enough for the price (5,5k €) So I bought her and took her home. Specs : -BMW e53 -Manual transmission (5speed) -M54 engine (230hp) -17inch alloy wheels Last edited by Pueseso; 06-19-2015 at 01:46 PM. |

Mods will be a bit out of order since I cannot recall exactly the right order.
So first things first, I needed to touch her skin to skin so I replaced the worn out leather of the steering wheel with a new natural leather from a local leather shop. Now we are beginning to feel each other

Next thing was the interior.
I really hated the black horrible interior it had so I bought a complete grey leather interior from a scrap yard. Lucky me it was in a reasonable shape and even was sport type. I went completely crazy and also bought the 4 door panels and the central console to mach the seats colour. Everything with wood looks was discarded . TODO: Change the gear knob to something better looking. ![]() Last edited by Pueseso; 06-19-2015 at 05:01 PM. |

Now it is the external mods time :-)
First thing I had in mind was to get rid of the rotten tail pipes (Is this the right name?) and put something better looking. 50€ each one, perfect!! I think they look good (they are straight even if the picture suggests something else) TODO: Change tail lights to get rid of amber lights. |

I love the silver grills so I took them to my local shop and got them painted.
And also the upper ones. I love how they look now ![]() ![]()

The silver grills could have been my favorite mod but I asked the shop to paint some more bits:
The roof rails The mirror covers And the complete windows surrounds (I had to order a set of surrounds/whatever the name they have, from UK and then paint them) |

I've never seen an X5 with fabric seats before. Interesting... May be more suited to the climate in Spain eh?
So what plans do you have for your frog?

Two small changes that make a lot of difference.
The BMW logo was losing some paint because of some idiot ![]() A very good replica for 6€ (I hope it lasts) And the gauges rings. Last bit is almost unnoticeable but very important for me. For unknown reasons the consumption needle was interfering with the RPM needle every time they crossed their paths (Who the hell designed this?) so I unmounted the consumption one and got rid of the "rear" side of the needle. Some tin welder work later (using a knife for the rough sides) it is now almost perfect
