Need an opinion on 05 4.4 purchase

Hello everyone,

Currently I am looking at an 05 x with the 4.4 6 speed in it. 124000mi

interior is immaculate with an aftermarket double din radio, the factory unit in the cargo area. beige leather heated seats steering park assist ect ect.

Exterior, Paint is in decent shape, some rock chips on the front, no repaints anywhere, and no dents.

underside.... here is were is gets iffy, the belly pan is moist, no running or active drips,
CV boot right side torn
Although it stops fine fine, the state inspection failed it for brakes. all the rotors look even and clean after test run.

all the engine hoses are original, no leaks.

Price 8800 from stealership. had it for 3 days.

Buying opportunity or should I stay away?

a little history, I did have an 02 e53 with 3.o and the wife loved it as did I,

and the maintenance was uptodate when I got it. and didn't have many problems, window regulators, keys dying, cv axles front. so out of 7 years of owner ship I let it go after a wreck.

I felt alittle lucky with that one, whats the opinion on this and are the V8s just as reliable? are there things I should be considering having done at this mileage no matter what?

Thanks
Rob

With that kind of mileage and a lot of original parts, budget $4-5k for repairs over the initial year or two if you plan to baseline it (brakes suspension joints, fluids, filters, hoses, plugs, belts, CV joint, tires?, etc.). I'd suggest getting the lower pan off and assessing any and all leaks to really see what you're up against. They are beasts to drive and the 04-06 have the slightly more reliable engines with a few more options than the earlier ones.

Once you baseline it, you should be good to go until everything wears out again

I had a 2005 4.4, and I can honestly tell you do not buy it unless its super super cheap like 1K, or given to you . Ours looked great and I thought was a super buy. It turned out after a short time it needed about 4K in repairs and a transmission bump issue that would never go away. If you want more information on all the issues with that specific year and model I'll Pm you. I'm not into bashing and X5 just my honest experience with ours, we traded our as soon as we could for a 2006 3.0 and My wife is so much happier now. So let me know if you want the list of issues from ours. And I do all my own work and have BMW software. So the 4K was just parts not labor.

I would get a PPI done by a well recommended Indy and base a go or no go on the results rather than individual experiences. It could be that the things that tend to wear out prior to those miles have already been addressed.

If I were looking for a used X5 I would look for one at the top of my budget with the least miles that has the history of what was done/when and that has good PPI results. Depending on where I ended up I would look for a warranty to give me peace of mind for a year or two because even meeting the above it may not be what I*experience with that particular X5.

Did I read that correctly that its a 6speed??

I dont know your end of the market. But for near $9k you *should* be able to get one with a lot less miles.
