Those pieces are the spring loaded cup 'nubs' that indent when a cup is inserted, and if the cup or container is wiggled/slightly rotated carefully, allow for the cup to be pulled out.
I have no idea how they go back in. Try Search...still have mine, and they still work. 3 per cup holder hole, as shown in axgordon's photo. And, the OP's photo opened for me... GL, mD

They make replacement ones that have a flange preventing them being pushed in.
