front washer pump vs rear washer pump??

I'm looking at the diagrams on realoem and I cant tell if there's two washer pumps or just one? my front washers dont work but my rear ones do.

I would obviously "assume" there's two separate pumps??

I just dont want to pop the wrong pump out since I'm going to try to ninja the new pump in so I dont lose too much washer fluid all over the place.

Do you have headlight washers? If so, there are three pumps. One for the headlights, one for the windshield and one for the hatch.

on my 01 3.0, the pump on the left (looking from the front of the car) is the rear pump and the one on the right is the windshield pump. The pump on the side of the reservoir which is different from the other two is headlight washer. Instead of ninjaing the pump which you would be surprised how much mess it could make, buy a fluid pump (they are cheap under $10)

well when I said "ninja" I meant my feat of extraordinary speed I'm going to muster with swapping out the pump with a new one so I dont lose too much water in the reservoir.

obviously if I swap out the wrong pump I'll lose more water since I'm pulling out the pumps another two times at least.

In my 2006 X5, there are 2 pumps, see diagram below:

RealOEM.com - Online BMW Parts Catalog

- Pump #4 is for front windshield and rear tailgate glass.

- Pump #11 is for HL. Different topic, but I disable the HL pump to save fluid, I simply removed the Fuse controlling this HL pump and laid it aside inside the fuse box.

PS: If I am wrong, please correct me!

Washer Pumps

Washer pumps.
On some models with H/L washers, there are three pumps, one for the headlamps (BIG HOSE) located on the engine side of the what seems like a 5 gal box of fluid, while on the firewall end of the reservoir are two pumps one for the front and the other is the rear (#4 below) (if your vehicle is so equipped). Some models only have the rear pumps - NO HEAD LAMP WASHERS.

The second image below shows the two mounting points in the rear for the pumps.
While the two rear pumps are the same part number and are thereby interchangeable to determine if the other end works, they use separate hose lines with 90 degree fittings made from plastic.

The easiest way to repair, is to pull the electrical connectors off the rear units and H/L pumps, unbolt the two plastic nuts that hold the reservoir down, pull the two rear pumps out, and pull up the reservoir leaving the front headlamp pump hose connected. Once out pull the front H/L pump out. If you have Ninja quick hands you will loose a qt of fluid.
Once out you can rinse out all the crap in the tank, replace the filter seals, inspect for any cracks in the lines, fittings, etc with room.

Don't forget to replace the inlet screen (#5) if someone tossed yours out way back in time.

The pumps are cheap enough to replace both smaller front and rear washers pumps. (The rear pumps) Use non OE as this item is a HIGH failure item and there are lots of options on the market.
NOTE: If your tank is still leaking down to the pump level afterwards, you did not install the new filter/seals around each pump. If your seals are OE, buy new ones. Oh, and disconnect the front washer pump electrical quick connect, if you want to keep your hood and grill area clean this summer. That damn thing fires off every 5 washer pump cycles and must use 1.5 gals at a time.

Helpful?

OP, if you add you year, model, and engine to your signature, it will help all the respondents to your request for assistance.

I need to replace my rear pump and my headlight washer pump. I've had the replacements on my bench for months, but I've been trying to drain as much of the fluid before pulling them as I can. Not that it's expensive, but it's wasteful and I don't care to make the mess.

I had it almost down to E and then my shop topped it off when I had it in to replace my front air suspension bags. :|

Fluid transfer pump time.

The cheap ones are more than the fluid it self.
