Very valid point indeed. Not one person in 10 or even 20 would even consider the torque issue vs weight alone. Glad you brought it up for my peace of mind in "pulling out the slide rule" and for some general educational purposes for the majority of people that wouldn't consider the weight past 8" issue or even be aware it exists.

Love being able to haul the likes of bags of sand or cement and NOT inside in addition to the toolboxes. Very handy to no have to lift the toolboxes up inside. Very good to be apprised of the limitations to the system. The drop in capacity with the farther distance from the car is worthwhile trade off. Even being able to fit one leg in front of the rack is worth it for loading into the open window.

I dunno about your POV. Given the space, if allows, I'd rather have my stuff inside the trunk......

Hell, I was doing a project and I think I had about forty five 50lbs of self leveling in the trunk (seats folded to get the load spread).

Hitch rack for me would be for more utilitarian stuff like cooler, kids wagins, etc, all shoved into a hitch rack bag to boot.

The backpack is mostly for when I need a little more space. I get a little nervous about my tools out in the back. They are about the same value as the X5 itself

Here is mine, i carried these for 3hr trip with no issues. They are very heavy, not sure how much but i may have been pushing the 500 limit.

LOL. Oh mai. That is alot of weight.....

I dunno what a fridge weighs but last year, I bought a new one and I gave my former one to a buddy. He dumped it on the back rack, similar to what you guys done. I could never have even considered that !

Don't think these are legal over here. Load cannot extend vehicle by more than 1 metre and must be 'flagged' or illuminated by additional lights if vehicle lights are obscured (by law). Most I've seen on the back of any vehicle here is a bike rack. That said, I like the concept and can see many uses for this system.

Harbour Freight has this for $47 now, what a deal! If anyone wants a cargo carrier this is the one to buy, especially at this price. Just letting people know of the sale

That's the one I started with. Add $15 for the tow hitch and about $10 in brackets and $5 for the hardened pin and you can make it fold up when not in use.

@jsoto. Fridge is mostly air the biggest ones less than 300#

@kvc: sticks out maybe 80cm.

I was busy last time they had the killer sale but I used a 20% off single item coupon and for nearly as good of a deal.

The 300# model made for atv is a decent alternative if you won't be needing more capacity and want a nicer looking unit that is a little more compact and higher off the ground.
