2001 4.4 gearbox issue.
recently I've had some issues with my gearbox, I hope someone with experience can shed light on this. If I accelerate moderately for the first or second time after start up, the gearbox feels like it slipped out of gear (feels like brakes have been slammed on) and makes a very loud screech, this is then followed by it going in gear and setting of rather aggressively. if I slowly take it through the gears with very low acceleration it will be fine and when this process is done it is fine even under heavy acceleration. out of the 10 or so times it has happened the TFS error has only came ones, but when the car was switched off and on it was fine with no error stored when hooked to diagnostics. any help is greatly appreciated

Sounds pretty serious if you're getting a loud screeching sound from your transmission. I would take it to a transmission service centre ASAP. Has it ever been serviced? What sort of mileage does the car have?

Hi guys, took it to dealers and they are saying it needs a new tranny, however they said no errors came on the diagnostics and they couldnt replicate the problem.
So how they came to the diagnoses is anybodys guess. Is there anyone here who can shed light on this problem. It only seems to happen when the fluid is cold, once warmed up i can give it the beans and it wont slip gear. Ive ordered the esso oil and the bmw filter and will attempt a oil change when they arrive.

Hi guys,
been a while since i have logged due to new additions to the family and all the joys of fatherhood, but i am back to update all my old threads for fellow members. the issue in this thread was completely resolved with a oil and filter change. over a year and 15k miles later the x5 Franny is still going strong.

Most likely the ATF level is low. ATF contract (Shrink in volume) when it is cold and exapnds when it is hot.
