I replaced all rubber that came with the rebuild kit, but did not replace the clutches or the metals.

Also, my trains had 180k on it and looked really good as well.

Thanks. Did you do anything to clean the clutches? I'd love to get all the old fluid off of them with a degreaser, but not sure if this would screw them up...

No, just wiped them with a rag. They are saturated with ATF so I wouldn't use a degreaser.

Thanks for the responses.

Any hints on removing the booger of a retaining ring on the F cylinder? It retains the internal bearing you can see in this pic:

I’ve done it several times but, to be honest, it isn’t worth the effort as I’ve never seen a worn rear carrier/output shaft steady bearing yet. Just curious why you want to remove it?

WOW, I looked at that tranny rebuild and concluded that the old saying is
true. A difficult job is easy when you know how to do it. I got a headache
just watching the process unfold and have decided that if I ever need a
transmission rebuild i'll avoid the satisfaction of DIY and have an expert
do the job.

I did not replace it. It was not worn in mine and a new one was not included with the overhaul kit.

Thanks folks. Based on your responses I think I'll leave this one alone.

As to why I wanted to take this apart, I am trying to disassemble as much of the trans as possible in order to inspect and clean as many components as I can. The bearing looks to be in great shape, so I ended up leaving it alone. I degreased the entire assembly and coated it with fresh ATF.

Let me k ow how everything goes. I may want to do the same for my 01 4.4. I always thought that you needed many special tools.

The only special tools I needed I made. If you look at the posts from rrphil you can see what the tools look like that he made. Very simple.
