Help!! Heater Blower Motor has a mind of it's own!!

This morning a figured I'd put the heat on since it was a little chilly and no heat, no fan. I turned the heat up, nothing. i turned the fan up, Nothing! Then I'm a block away from work and suddenly the fan starts working, Hallaluya!! So I'm driving back to the house and suddenly the fan decides to slow down and then it stops. It won't blow more than the fan speed I select but it definitely does whatever it wants when it wants. How do I fix this issue since winter is coming up.

Thanks in advance.

Is it still doing it? Or did you manage to figure out what was causing it?

Electric issues are another matter

But to answer your questions, FSR swap made those quirky issues disappear...
If you have small hands or a contorsionist, you should be able to swap without dropping the glovebox. Just shove your hand in there, reach it to disconnect and then swap

Don't go cheap on the FSR, the $40 ones off e-bay are garbage (I had 2 fail in under 1 yrs), seller swapped/no charged.

Went with Genuine BMW FSR and no issues in over 4 yrs.

I thought about buying one of the cheaper ones from fcp since them have lifetime warranty. Thoughts?

The bad FSRs I got off e-bay were from Deutsche Parts, I now refer to them as Douche Parts.

Nothing but cheap/knockoff/China made garbage. The info on the MB/Porsche/BMW forums reads like a train wreck.

They rate a C- on BBB website.

I've posted advice on the FSR recently. Buy either genuine BMW or the OEM part (Valeo). Replace before winter (trust me on this). 15 minutes on a LHD E53.

I think I'm going to do an experiment. I might order 2 of the cheaper ones from fcp since they have a lifetime warranty on all parts, and keep a spare in the car. I don't really have to worry about winter killing it here though, it doesn't freeze in Houston.

Your X5, your budget. Have you also considered the consequences of failure in hot Houston summer (I lived in Atlanta, it is likely similar)? Don't know if you have young kids, drive any seniors around, wear a necktie to work, etc. -- all times and areas when you may want a functioning blower motor and controls.

IF you have controls that at least let you select temperature and air distribution (no guarantees), you can heat the car to a reasonable amount driving at highway speeds. You won't fog the windows with one person.

For summer (a friend had his failure on his FSH during a HOT summer), he still talks about the failure in summer (it was above 40 C / 100 F).

You are saving yourself $ on shop labor, saving time from dropping it off and picking it up from a shop (time is money) and some $ on the part (plenty of BMW dealers sell mail order and discount 20 to 25% in the US or you can check with BMW CCA Roundel vendors if you are a member). Isn't it work enough to "do it once, do it right" and have peace of mind?
