Well it appears to be that time again. I try as much as possible not to drive my baby but alas my mom has my e12 on extended leave :roll eyes: I always had a slight smoke after driving my X5 from start up but burn off would happen and no significant oil loss whatsoever. Keep in mind I drive it maybe once a month about 300 miles R/T highway. I have 130K miles and since moved to the higher altitude of Seattle. Since I have been here in days the oil smell was bad and didn't go away. I have removed the plastics above the oil separator hoses and I believe the collapsed can be my issue. Question is should I (necessary only) replace or look at anything else? Logic points back to why they collapsed? No codes, no smoke from tailpipe and runs like I just rolled it off the show room floor. Just the burning. Please chime in with any ideas or similar issues. As always thanks for the help... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

working on it as we speak! Oddity I have run in to...the #9 hose states on realoem clamps but my prior guide guy who did his states no clamps? Should I just not replace them? It is going to be a bear to put them on if I have to.

BTW separator is not clogged and no milky substance just a bit clumped oil. I will replace this and the hoses. Should I do anything else?

It appears that there is not a clamp as the Oil Separator appears to have molded flange on that bottom one end. That line just returns oil to the pan VIA the return tube. Little negative pressure at that point.
I personally would install a clamp as it should be a air tight fit to prevent oil leakage. 4.6 guys....Your thoughts?

The only recommendation I would offer is run a grass trimmer string down the return tube return line to confirm it will allow flow and it is not full of dry or wet "mayo". Image part #14

when i did this repair on a 4.4; I replaced part #1, hoses #4,#5, #10, and #12. it has been years since and haven't had any issues. the problem looked very similar to what the OP has posted. disintegrated hoses and oil dripping down the back side of the engine.

Good luck. Wash first with Dawn Dish Detergent and some engine/grease cleaner as it will save your clothes. Looks bad but should be straight forward.
There is a posting called "all in on 4.6 oil leaks" that shows the engine pulled to see all the parts you will get to only feel when working.

That seems to be a very unusual way for those hoses to fail unless they were burned somehow. Haven't seen that one in normal circumstances.
Mayo problems most often happen to cold country X5s not Seattle.
