Thanks for that. I have now found out the part I have is for 2008 on and even as you say the iPhone 5 did not come out until 2013 this works with the iPhone 5 in the 2008 model the adapter is used mainly to charge the phone and use the Internal antenna for Bluetooth which my iPhone 5 works with Bluetooth in my 2005 car all I wanted to know was what adapter do i need for the 2005 car if need be I can use an iPhone 4 as a car phone

Something like this should resolve the noise problem when power is connected to the phone -

Check out this link, I have had the Mediabridge for several years and each iteration that preceded it. All worked great with existing controls. With the Mediabridge you can connect your iPhone by bluetooth or with aux cable. You could also add on the Sirius module for that dead spot as an alternative.

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if it's easy to retrofit a center armrest with a snap-in adapter, on an E53 without a snap-in adapter at all?

I considered that a few years back. I have an iPhone and there was nothing offered by BMW as a retrofit to newer phones and I haven't seen anything offered in the aftermarket for any cellphone.
