E53 06 4.8 rear tire wear - alignment
I am running Cont DWS 315 20" tires. I had the alignment done about 15k ago I notice my inner tire edge in the tears are wearing. Already replaced both upper control arms on both side. Does the X5 have a rear tire wear problem? Also where can I find the BMW alignment specification for my truck? My alignment was done on a laser hunter machine and specified range is listed below, I just want to confirm these are correct specs, Front Camber -0.6 to 0.2 deg Caster 6.3 to 7.3 deg Toe 0.04" to 0.11" Turning angle diff -2.08 to -1.08 deg Rear Camber -2.2 to -1.5 deg Toe 0.03" to 0.12" Thanks Ted |

If your camber on the rear is set to the lower range of spec, set your rear toe to near zero. That won't be in spec, but it will save those shoulders. Mine are perfect wear and set as such. I run 20's and those exact tires.

If your joints are good and you align as I stated above, you can get great life out of your tires. I'm running same setup without issues. I would only look at camber kits if you are running it lower than stock and can't get camber back in spec. As for toe, that you can set. And the front camber has some adjustment too.

Like it has been said, toe is what wears the tires fast, so adjust as close to 0 as possible.
I often see techs check for loose ball joints at the rear of a air suspension X5. They jack the vehicle and find to play. The problem is that the air bag is pushing on the suspension arm and will make any play non detactable. The tension needs to be removed from the air bag or it must be deflated to be able to check the rear lower ball joint. May be that's your problem? |

Thanks largely for this info. Is the BMW special tool really needed, or can they just loosen the top and move strut into position to get desired. Camber. Ted |

Pretty sure you don't need tool. Just leave them barely loose and tap it over with the nuts still on.
