Looks like water intrusion.

Like a bathroom mirror that is near a sink.

Looks like you need a new mirror. No polishing is going to fix that.

Ditto above...and since it looks like you have the regular heated mirrors...not the more expensive EC (auto dimming) mirror glass"you may want to look for the aspherical wide angle mirrors so that you won't have to add those attachments to gain better visibility

Aspherical wide angle mirror glass...if you go to the EURO side of the online part database...look for the 11 digit part nbr for #1 in the diagram below...it makes it easier to shop for when using the correct BMW part nbr (51167039597)...especially ebay were the prices are really reasonable compared to some vendors & the dealer.

It is actually rust from the heated base plate. I simply replaced mine with the aspherical ones that QSilver7 mentioned. I purchased mine on eBay.

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
^Agreed, I have them too "blue aspherical" from Latvia, as both my mirrors were delaminated when I got the X. Been working great for years and I do love the extra visibility I get from them,

Looking up part numbers to replace my mirrors.

what about the right hand mirror,
1. Did you replace the Convex "objects in mirror are closer..." with the wide angle also?
2. are you happier with the wide angle on the pass side than the original convex?

thanks
