Bmw E53 Diesel Transmission problems?

Hello all, i realy need your opinion...after a rebuild of the GM 5l40-e (torque converter and all clutches package) i remained with a very strange noise coming from the transmission area. When oils are cold i have a noise (like the wind under the door) wich i hear also when the car is roling at 60km/h in neutral with the engine off. I hear it when i accelerate , also when decelerating/braking, but with different tones. Can you tell me what is this about ? I have changed the transfer box because the mechanic sayd that the problem was there, but it wasn-t...also the bush+bearing from the rear side of the driveshaft and the noise is still there. Now the mechanic that repaired the gearbox says that the problem is the front diff but i8`m not willing to change all my car-s parts because of the word "I think" . So , please give me some advices

Sounds can be very deceiving from inside the vehicle. Have you checked wheel bearings? I have a crook front left wheel bearing which makes a similar sound to what you are describing. Jack the car up and turn the wheels and see if any are not sounding smooth when turning.

(I am hoping to change my bearing this week.)

Hi Tom, i have already did this but with no luck...it is very courious because the sound is on different tonalities hi/low pitch...bearings are looking good...

Have you tried running it on jack stands or on a hoist with all 4 wheels off the ground so you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from?

Hi,today i went to a friend and raised The car ,fiered up The car ,shifted into drive and surprise...found that The sound was from The driveshat bush/bearing...it was changed when i made the gearbox rebuild,but it seems that it is a low quality brand...tomorow i wait a new one,OEM not aftermarket part and hope that The sound will be gone for good...i ll keep in touch ! Cheers

Hello,i have managed to change the rear driveshaft bush with bearing and The sound is gone forever

. Also there is a small piece of metal (i think is a dust cover) Between The rear face of The bearing and The driveshaft wich i think it was touching The metal plate of The bearing and maybe that was The problem, or The bearing itself. I m happy that that sound is gone,but some mistakes took Me a lot of cash

. Nextime i will be more carefull

Also i hâd some problems with The wheel bearings when i ve buyed The car,and when i tryed to remove them i couldn-t depress the wheel driveshafts...i had to go to The truck service at a powerfull hidraulyc press to depress them(not the bearings,the driveshafts) The driveshafts have depressed at 80ton power , and the bearings at 9 ton . Driveshafts were never changed and they have "welded" by rust dirt water hi temp etc...hope you will do it easyer than i did it .

I managed to press out the driveshaft with a 3 jaw puller. The hardest part for me was getting the hub off. Tried all sorts of things like bolting the disc on back to front with loose bolts and using it like a slide hammer. Ended up by using a large wheel puller I have outside the hub area and pulling the hub from the back with threaded rod and a bearing extractor. (Bit hard to describe, but it worked.) Mine was front left wheel bearing. The X is silent again.

The annoying thing was that 3 weeks prior I changed a rear wheel bearing on my E39. The E39 bearing was a piece of cake compared with the front one on the X.
