4.6is owners, where does it redline before shifting?
Proud new owner of a 2003 Estroil Blue 4.6is. But I noticed that it shifts at the 6000RPM mark to the next gear, which is the same as my 4.4i.... This can't be normal, where do your 4.6is's redline at before shifting? Cheers, Frank ***EDIT, I guess I should have checked youtube first. Looks like the same as mine...*** Last edited by swissfrank; 12-03-2015 at 03:18 AM. Reason: used the interwebs |

Grüezi, congratulations on the new rig! You can always reflash the dme and set the redline to whatever you like. I wouldn't go higher than 6,700 or simply use the manual mode and have fun learning where you think the shift points should be set at. Tschüss

Redline is 6200. Peak HP with stock tune is at 5700. Peak torque is at 4000. Without a tune, increasing the redline will increase the time it takes to get from A to B.

He's dead right, BCredliner. I should have said if you max out the engine with mods, I wouldn't go over 6,700 as a limit.

I have the Dinan Tune. It increases the HP to 369 at 5700. The TQ peak is 382 at 4500. Redline is increased to 6500 because HP is still 347. After 6500 HP is going to drop off at an increasing rate.
Key to fastest time from A to B is to stay in the power band through the gears. Power band is some amount of RPMs below max HP and some amount of RPMs above max HP. It takes very little increase in redline to result in shifts that are too close to max HP and to far past the max. I have other mods and have not increased the redline further. The reasons I haven't is that I don't know when the valve train can't handle the RPMs but I do know what happens when it can't. And the power band will change very little unless the cams are changed.

I have never reflashed my own cpmputers. I've hacked a few cell phones in my day but I leave that to people who know what they're doing. I have a local guy who's done 2 cars for me and it's all customizable. Save a copy of your existing file if you do anything.
I'm sure in the forums you can learn all you need to know. Hopp da bassa!

Are you talking about a custom tune?

I was thinking about generic tunes like a Dinan tune but that can be tweaked by a tuner from either a dyno or butt-dyno results.
I had 2 M62TUB44's flashed and drove them for a month and requested changes based on what I felt both at the seat and in the pocket with regard to fuel efficiency. One vehicle had all the intake parts from Dinan and the other was bone stock. There were improvements on both. Cost was around $200-250. I think it would be fun to learn to do it myself but I've never taken the time to learn.
