2005 4.4 won't crank after battery replacement

Here is the scenario:

I ran out of gas, and during the course of being on the side of the road with the hazards on for 4-5 hours the battery discharged.

Since I just bought the X5 6 months ago, I didn't know how old the battery was so I purchased a new one, and installed it.

When I connected the battery the alarm went off which I disarmed with the key fob.

Now when I try to start the X5, I see Code displayed on the dash, and the alarm goes off if I attempt to start. It will not even crank.

I have disarmed the alarm with the key fob as well as locked and unlocked the drivers door manually several times.

I know I'm missing something easy here.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Check your owners manual books and look for a 4 digit code. You might have to enter that into your radio or (we have an '03 so I'm unfamiliar with the' 05) is thete a way to enter something using the stick left of the steering column or the buttons on the instrument cluster? The truck thinks it's been stolen. You need to enter the correct code to start the truck. Anti-theft?
Had your battery died and you changed the battery within a short time, this might not happen but for too long and the "reserve" batteries/capacitors on the boards of your 5 computers died too. Full reset. Call the bmw roadside assistance number.

I could also be dead wrong.

Don't enter the wrong code 3 times!!!

Try disconnecting the battery and let it sit for a few hours.
Once all internal capacitors are fully discharged it may forget the code memory...Reconnect the battery and attach a battery charger to it. If you are in lock out and dont recall the code......(try 0000 or 1234)

If when you hook it all back up it still asks for the code, just let the 15 minute timer on the screen time out and it may start then... hopefully
To Reset:
must leave car on key position 1 for 60 minutes
then turn off
try to restart.

Some cars require key position 2 for 60 minutes.

You might have to reset your cluster at a dealership if all fails.
Then you'll have to reset your sunroof, don't ask me why.

From another guy with an '05 e53. I guess they're the same setup.

"The issue has been resolved. I left the key in ignition at position 1 for 60 minutes. Then removed the key, re-inserted it and started the car. It's all good now."

Good luck!

I just went out and put the key in position 1. and will check back in 45 minutes. I've blocked the car in with another car so no one can steal it. It's under 3 cameras so if anyone tries to steal anything it will be recorded.... I will report back to see if this does it.

You can always use your 2nd key and manually lock the door as well.

If you left the key in the ignition and the battery went dead, you might had bricked the chip in the key. Get the second key and see if it starts the X.

Kind of courious how this could happen. There is now power going to the EWS chip in the key.

Maybe the EWS has some how reset it's self and needs a bumpstart?

Search is your friend. There's another thread on here in which the key was left in the ignition and the battery died. Chip in the key was bricked.
